The oil shortages of the 1970s changed the energy picture for the world. It created an interest in alternative energy sources (i.e. green energy), paving the way for the re-entry of the windmill to generate electricity.  The interest in wind energy and particularly in wind turbines resurfaced in response to climbing energy prices and questionable availability of conventional fuels. Additionally, the combustion of oil, coal and other fossil fuels, are changing the planet’s climate.  This “global warming” will severely impact both human populations and ecological systems over the next decades and centuries.

The development and exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) which substitute the conventional energy resources, many of which are very quickly being exhausted, is a basic feature of the energy policy of technologically developed countries.  In this respect the extensive use wind energy and wind turbines seems to be imperative.

Wind energy is a renewable form of energy, which is non-polluting powered by natural forces rather than traditional fuel.  Once operational wind turbines (horizontal axis wind turbines, vertical axis wind turbines, offwshore wind turbines) provides years of low cost energy with only minimal expenses required to maintain the turbines continue to operate efficiently.  As the demand for electricity continues to increase, fossil fuel prices continue to rise, and concerns about climate change grow, wind energy provides an alternative choice for electric generation.

The precise amount of energy that can be extracted from the wind depends on many factors, which are reflected in standard formulae.  The formulae are complicated and depend on such factors as the variability and distribution of wind speed, the height of the rotor and the density of the air.
